Here in Otley, our Lodges are for men, but Freemasonry isn’t exclusively male. Woman’s Freemasonry has flourished in Britain for more than a century, sharing the same values of integrity, friendship, respect and service.

For men and women alike, Freemasonry has its traditions and ceremonies, but at its heart it is remarkably simple: friendship, personal development and helping others.

Freemasonry has traditions and ceremonies that remain private, but who we are, where we meet and the work we do in our communities are very much in the open.

Our buildings are visible. Our members talk openly about belonging. And increasingly, we welcome people in to see Freemasonry for themselves.

TRADITION IN A MODERN WORLD

Old traditions, but not old-fashioned thinking.

 

Freemasonry has ceremonies and customs that have developed over centuries. They give meetings a sense of occasion and provide a shared experience between generations of members.

You don’t need to understand any of it before joining. Like most things in Freemasonry, it makes more sense when you experience it for yourself.

Somewhere you're known, not just noticed.

Regular meetings create friendships across ages, professions and backgrounds. For many members, that sense of connection becomes one of the most valuable parts of belonging.

In a world where many of our connections have become fleeting or digital, Freemasonry still gives people the opportunity to meet, talk and build genuine friendships.

SOMETHING BEYOND YOURSELF

Membership comes with a purpose.

Freemasonry encourages people to contribute — supporting one another, helping their communities and giving their time, experience and resources where they can make a difference.

That might mean supporting a local charity, volunteering, helping someone through a difficult time or simply putting your skills to good use.

It isn’t about how much you give. It’s about developing the habit of thinking about what you can contribute.

INSIDE A LODGE

What actually happens?

Probably much more ordinary than you imagine.

A Masonic evening combines tradition, friendship and a good social occasion. There are formal parts to the meeting, but there is also plenty of conversation, laughter and time spent together.

You don’t need to know the terminology or understand the traditions before you join. Everyone starts in exactly the same place.

01 - ARRIVE & CATCH UP

Members arrive, have a drink, chat and catch up before the meeting begins.

Behind the scenes, members also prepare the Lodge room, often called the Temple, setting everything out ready for the evening’s meeting and ceremony.

It is usually a relaxed and sociable start to the evening.

02 - THE LODGE MEETING

There is some ordinary Lodge business, but the main part of many meetings is a Masonic ceremony.

Rather like a short play performed by the members themselves, each ceremony uses words, symbolism and tradition to introduce the history, principles and values of Freemasonry through its different Degrees.

03 - THE FESTIVE BOARD

After the meeting, members usually sit down together for what Freemasons traditionally call the Festive Board — essentially dinner together.

It is an important social part of the evening, combining good food and conversation with some Masonic tradition. There are formal toasts and occasional speeches, but plenty of time simply to talk, laugh and enjoy each other’s company.

For many members, the friendships built around the dining table are one of the most enjoyable parts of Freemasonry.

A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

You can explain Freemasonry, its traditions and what happens at a meeting — but sometimes the best way to understand it is to hear from someone who actually joined.

Leodiensis 4029 at a Glance

Leodiensis Lodge, established over 100 years ago, holds its meetings at Westbourne House in Otley.

For individuals interested in Freemasonry but with limited time, we may be the ideal choice, as we hold only five formal meetings each year, starting at 6:30 pm. These meetings occur on the second Thursday in June (for our Installation), as well as in October, December, February, and April.

In addition to our formal meetings, we gather at least a couple of times each month for regular practices and social events.

The annual membership fee is currently £190. The dress code for our Lodge is a dark suit and white gloves.
